The Community Service Component of the Student Work and Service Program (SWASP) is a unique program that serves post-secondary students and community organizations, enabling students to work in their home community during the summer, develop transferable skills, explore career interests and help nonprofits carry out their programs. In return, they receive a $1,400 tuition voucher upon completion of a 280-hour placement (8 weeks), plus a weekly stipend of $175. This program has been operating since 1994, thanks to a three-way partnership of Service Canada, the provincial Department of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and the Community Services Council Newfoundland and Labrador.
