The Voluntary Sector in Atlantic Canada

In Atlantic Canada there are approximately 13,000 organizations formally registered as either incorporated nonprofits or charities. There are numerous other groups that are more informal and unincorporated. Collectively, formally registered organizations in Atlantic Canada have annual revenues of $6 billion and an estimated paid staff of 106,000 ($4 billion annual revenues and 83,000 staff when Hospitals, Universities, and Colleges are excluded).

The Community Services Council NL has a listing of 5,000+ voluntary, community-based groups in Newfoundland and Labrador. Of these, around 2,200 are formally registered, and a little more than half of those are charities. [Source: CSC NL]

Volunteering

Atlantic Canada reports a volunteer complement of one million people who contribute about 127 million hours of volunteer time per year – the equivalent of 66,000 full-time jobs! The average Atlantic Canadian is a member of two organizations.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, about 46% of the population aged 15+ volunteer for nonprofit organizations. The highest rate in the country is Saskatchewan with 59%, and the lowest is Quebec with 37%. The average number of volunteer hours per year is 176 for Newfoundland and Labrador. The highest is in Nunavut at 186 hours and the lowest is Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan, both at 147 hours.

However, 87% of people surveyed in Newfoundland and Labrador reported helping people directly through 'informal volunteering', tied with Nova Scotia for the highest rate in the country. The lowest is the Northwest Territories at 76%.

Financial Donations

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have one of the highest donor rates in the country at 91%, giving an average annual donation of $300, well behind Alberta at $596 but ahead of Quebec, with an average donation of $219.
