Mission Statement
To further the safety and well being of citizens in the Eastern Avalon area through the development and strengthening of community partnerships aimed at the prevention of injuries in all aspects of everyday living.
Background
The National Safe Communities Foundation was created as a result of one family’s tragedy. In November 1994 Sean Kells was killed on the job at the age of 19. It wasn't an accident; it was preventable. Since that tragic day, Sean's father Paul Kells, has made it his goal to help prevent any other family from experiencing the loss and pain that he and his family have experienced. His goal has been to get as many communities involved in his program as possible.
Avalon East was designated a Safe Community in 2001 by the National Safe Communities Foundation. The goal is to help reduce the occurrence of injuries in the Avalon East area related to the workplace, school, home, recreation and traffic. This goal will be reached through the education of individuals, employees and employers.
Community Impact
Avalon East Safe Communities is currently concentrating on four areas within the community. These include:
- Workplace Safety
The main objective is to reduce the amount of young workers injured on the job and to promote safety. This committee is currently in the process of implementing a “Safety and Health Passport” program to help reduce work related injuries
- Recreation Safety
The goal is to increase the awareness of playground safety in the home, at school and in the community, thus reducing injuries.
- Home/School Safety
The main objective is to reduce and prevent falls that occur at home and school. This area concentrates on seniors and children.
- Traffic Safety
The goal is to reduce and prevent injuries in motor vehicle accidents through the education and awareness of car seats and booster seats. Also, to reduce the frequency of pedestrian injuries with emphasis on children and youth.
