Roll up your Sleeves and Help Canadian Blood Services Get Ready for World Youth Day!

OTTAWA, July 19 /CNW/ - In preparation for World Youth Day in Toronto, Canadian Blood Services is asking Canadians of all denominations to give blood to ensure that an adequate supply of blood is on hand for the event that will see the city grow by an expected 500,000 youths.

The city of Toronto is hosting hundreds of thousands of young Catholics from 172 countries attending World Youth Day in a celebration of prayer, music, cultural exchange, and community projects.

"As the youth of the world show their support for raising awareness of the need for blood, we ask that Canadians show their support for world youth by donating blood. Everyone across the country can roll up their sleeves and do their part to make this event a success" said Graham Sher, Chief Executive Officer of Canadian Blood Services.

Summer can be a challenging time for the blood system and donating before an event such as this can help ensure an adequate supply. World Youth Day organizers have been very supportive of CBS's efforts to encourage Canadian pilgrims to donate blood. In turn, Canadians can show their support of World Youth Day by taking one hour of their time to donate.

"If you already donate blood, thank you. If you haven't given blood, we need you. There has never been a better time to start. Please become a regular donor, giving blood twice a year, every year. The blood you give today, could save a life tomorrow," added Dr. Sher.

Please call 1 888 2 DONATE (1 888 236-6283) for blood donor clinic information, eligibility information or to book an appointment.

Canadian Blood Services is a national, not-for-profit charitable organization that manages the blood supply in all provinces and territories outside of Quebec and operates the country's bone marrow donor registry. CBS operates 43 permanent collection sites, 11 bone marrow donor centres and more than 10,000 donor clinics annually. For more information, please visit our web site at www.bloodservices.ca.
