Penelope Rowe discusses ‘mandatory volunteering’ plan in New Brunswick The New Brunswick government is introducing volunteering as a high school graduation requirement. Since 2006, students in Newfoundland and Labrador have been contributing 30 hours of service to the community as part of a mandatory career development course. In this CBC Radio audio clip, students in NB offer their opinions, followed by an interview with Penelope Rowe of the Community Sector Council NL. Rowe speaks about how the language used in discussing these programs can be problematic — the focus should be on community contribution or engagement, instead of 'mandatory volunteering'. She also talks about some of the benefits of curriculum-based volunteer work for students. May 28, 2010

New report reveals effect of recession on poverty in Canada Bearing the Brunt: How the 2008-2009 Recession Created Poverty for Canadian Families demonstrates the deep impact of the recession by examining key economic trends, comparing them to the baseline of 2007 – the last year for which we have poverty measures available. This trend analysis projects that the poverty rate in Canada rose to 11.7% in 2009, an increase of over 900,000 Canadians compared to 2007. The child poverty rate has likely risen to at least 12%, an increase of 160,000 children compared to 2007. May 5, 2010

Canada Revenue Agency distributes information sheet on recent Disbursement Quota Calculation changes to registered charities Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will begin mailing information sheets to registered charities in April 2010 with instructions on how to deal with changes to the disbursement quota (DQ) calculations in the annual Information Return.

Request for Proposals: Community Based Housing Newfoundland Labrador Housing (Housing) invites proposal submissions to develop a series of options to support Community Based Housing groups within Newfoundland and Labrador.
Funding available from United Way of Newfoundland and Labrador Last year United Way of Newfoundland and Labrador disbursed almost $450,000 in grants to charities for programs and services benefitting individuals and neighborhoods throughout our province. United Way of Newfoundland and Labrador has issued its latest Call for Proposals for Registered Charities throughout the province to apply for funding for programs and services.
Provincial youth leadership conference aims to inspire students to become involved in global issues The RADHOC Youth Leadership Conference is a free conference on March 26-27, open to youth from across the Atlantic provinces. Students will participate in two full days of interactive workshops and presentations on topics including climate change, women's rights, fair trade, poverty, child soldiers, and health issues. This education is then backed up by skill-building sessions, which teach the students strategies for fundraising, public speaking, media outreach, event planning, starting a group, running a meeting, and much more.
Task force seeks input for national financial literacy strategy In its 2009 budget, the Government of Canada announced its intention to establish a national task force dedicated to the issue of financial literacy. The Task Force on Financial Literacy will provide advice and recommendations to the federal Minister of Finance on a national strategy to strengthen the financial literacy of Canadians. A series of public sessions will seek out the thoughts and perspectives of Canadians over the next several months with a session in St. John's on April 22.
Presentation and discussion on giving and volunteering in Atlantic Canada Join Community Services Council Newfoundland and Labrador for an online presentation and discussion about the results of the Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating. David Lasby of Imagine Canada will conduct an online presentation focusing on rates and trends of giving and volunteering in the Atlantic region followed by a discussion amongst attendees about the implications of the survey results.
New project to guide nonprofits through Canada Revenue Agency's charity registration process A Nova Scotian legal team specializing in voluntary sector matters is currently in the process of drafting what they believe will become the country's first charitable registration decision tree - a document designed to guide charitable organization hopefuls through the sometimes sticky morass of the Canada Revenue Agency's (CRA) rules on how it makes its decisions before conferring charitable status upon an organization.

A new Investors Group poll shows increases planned for contributions of both time and money, with volunteer efforts expected to see the largest increase with three-in-ten (29 per cent) Canadians saying they plan to donate more time to worthwhile causes in 2010. But financial contributions are also expected to enjoy an upswing, with two-in-ten (19 per cent) saying they plan to increase the size of their donations this year.
