Advancing the Voluntary Community-based Sector

The Community Services Council Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to strengthening and promoting the essential role that the community sector plays in building healthy and prosperous communities.

SWASP
The Student Work and Service Program Community Service Component is a career-related employment program for post-secondary students.

Community Enterprise
The Community Services Council is helping non-profits to expand their social enterprise activity through webinars, workshops and guidance with the Community Enterprise Development Program.

CSC Training Sessions
CSC training programs are designed by experienced trainers to address the needs of voluntary, community-based groups. Learn about volunteer management, effective governance, risk management, youth engagement and more.

Voluntary Sector Clusters Development
The Voluntary Sector Clusters project is exploring the potential for clusters development within the voluntary sector to enable collaboration and provide support to a variety of organizations within an area-based context.

Voluntary Gateway
Voluntary Gateway is a pan-Canadian portal that helps voluntary organizations build stronger, healthier and more vibrant communities by making it easier to communicate, network and share information.

Vibrant Communities
The Community Services Council Newfoundland and Labrador (CSC) is leading a local effort to reduce poverty and make St. John’s a more Vibrant Community.

Atlantic Charities Learning Exchange (ACLE)
The Atlantic Charities Learning Exchange (ACLE) was created to help small and rural charities in Atlantic Canada. This program will aid small and rural charities with compliance under the Income Tax Act.

Public Access
The province's Income Support Policy Manual is now an open book! That's good news for people wanting to know more about how the intricacies of the income support system works.

Volunteer Week
The CSC organizes Volunteer Week to recognize and express gratitude to thousands of dedicated volunteers in Newfoundland and Labrador, and to increase public awareness of their efforts.

enVision.ca
A dedicated resource centre for the community sector in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Volunteer Centre
Established by the CSC in 1977, the Volunteer Centre has gone on to develop the first leadership and training programs for volunteers and community organizations.

Conducting Leading-Edge Research

Research Initiatives

CURA
The Community University Research Alliance combines the strengths of academic and community-based researchers to assess policy shifts and approaches to new models of governance and service delivery.

Leadership Gap
This research was conducted in collaboration with the Canadian Rural Partnership. It explored the nature of leadership and volunteer service amongst people residing in Newfoundland & Labrador.

Technical Support Assessment
In Spring 2001, CSC conducted a technical support needs assessment of voluntary organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

Expanding Their Universe
This was a pilot project of the CSC and the MacMorran Community Centre. The project and subsequent report aims to address the importance of social inclusion in the lives of all school aged children and their families.

Surveys
The CSC has conducted surveys with various individuals and voluntary organizations in communities around the province.

Values Added Forum 2000
In November 2000, leaders from more than 60 voluntary organizations across the province gathered for a provinicial forum hosted by the Community Services Council Newfoundland and Labrador.

Previous Programs

IM/IT Training and Technical Support Network
CSC was leading a project to deliver technical training and support services to the voluntary sector in this province, as well as in Nova Scotia.

NL Canadian Volunteerism Initiative
Our NL CVI Network will play a key role in supporting the development and dissemination of knowledge of volunteerism at the local level.

Connecting for Community
A three year project that will increase the capacity of individuals and voluntary organizations in rural and remote communities who face barriers to using information technology.

Leadership In Progress
This program was a unique educational experience for the rising generation of decision-makers from the private, public, and voluntary sectors in the community.

Welfare to Work
The CSC hosted a National Forum on welfare to work programs. This Forum offered an opportunity to examine the range of policy and programs in Canada and internationally.

The Charities File
A joint project of the Canadian Federation of Voluntary Sector Networks and the Centre for Voluntary Sector Research and Development to build the capacity of charitable organizations across Canada.
